I would like to introduce everyone to Lorrie Adams, elected secretary of CALSB at our general meeting in Calgary. Lorrie is an Associate Professor with dual appointments to the Paralegal Studies and Library & Technology programs of MacEwan University. The CALSB executive welcomes Lorrie aboard!
The 2016 Conference was a mix of skilled paper presentations and vibrant panel discussions. Highlights included our Friday lunch presentation by Jim Eamon, Q.C., recent past president of the Alberta Law Society, and the Saturday morning panel participation by The Honourable Charlene S. Anderson's, Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta and past general counsel for the University of Calgary. The insights and experiences shared by
these distinguished speakers greatly contributed to a very successful conference. We would also like to congratulate Mr Justice Eamon on his recent appointment to the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.
Congratulations are also extended to Shannon O’Bryne on her excellent paper “Feminism(s), Progressive Corporate Law and the Oppression Remedy” which won the CALSB 2016 best paper award – It was also a finalist for the Holmes Cardozo Research Award at the 2016 International ALSB Conference in San Juan. Great work Shannon; yet another indication of the quality research being done by our CALSB members. We also thank Shannon for acting as our CALSB delegate in San Juan.
Here it is – our Fall 2016 newsletter as we look forward to our fourth conference. It is an exciting time to be part of CALSB.
The CALSB newsletter comes twice a year in Fall and Spring to update our members about the association’s activities and provide information about our annual conference. It also provides a vehicle for members to share information with their fellow members such as academic positions open at their schools or career accomplishments. Please send any such announcements to us. We will post newsletters on the website and email them to past conference attendees.
I would like to thank our 2016 conference chair Jim Silovs, Mount Royal University, for a successful Calgary event - Great Job! I would also like to thank Gil Lan, Ryerson University, our 2017 conference chair for the many hours he has already spent coordinating with PNALSB for the 2017 Vancouver Conference. More about this event below.
Under members’ news, this newsletter gives notice of one full time faculty posting at Mount Royal University in Alberta. We would be happy to provide updates on member promotions and achievements if you let us know.In addition to our long standing publisher support from Pearson and Nelson, in 2016 Mount Royal University and Grant MacEwan University joined Ryerson, Wilfrid Laurier and the University of Waterloo as academic institutions that sponsor and support the work of CALSB. We are grateful for their help in making the 2016 Conference another success and look forward to their continued support in 2017 and beyond.
